NIAGARA ICE JAM
SUDDEN BREAK-AWAY
FAMOUS BRIDGE WRECKED
(Received January 28, 2 p.m.)
VANCOUVER, January 27.
As a result of a phenomenal thaw, the ice-bound waters of the Niagara were suddenly let loose, and an icejam 100 feet high below the falls crushed the piers of the International Bridge, the central span, of which, 1000 feet long, collapsed into' the river. Two hundred workers who had been endeavouring for 100 hours, night and day, to disperse the jam with- dynamite, fled to safety.
A wall of water 25ft high flooded out the Government hydro-electric plant, which had already been evacuated, and caused damage estimated at £100,000.
i'The International . Bridge cost £1,000,000. -
