A FULL SHIP
AWATEA FOR SYDNEY
Augmented by visitors to the Empire Games and 150 th anniversary celebrations of Australia, the passenger list carried by the Union Company's liner Awatea when she! left Auckland yesterday afternoon for Sydney is believed to be the largest she has ever carried out of this port,- states the "New Zealand Herald" of today. A total of 481 passengers occupied practically all the liner's accommodation.
■ During the first three months of the year, there is usually a seasonal flow of travellers to Australia and- the recent heavy bookings result from decisions to make the crossing earlier in order to be present at Sydney for the celebrations.
Since Tuesday of last week nearly 1600 passengers have left Auckland and Wellington in four liners for Sydney. The Awatea, which will leave Wellington for Sydney next Tuesday, is already fully booked with 500 ■ passengers and it is expected that the Wanganella, which will sail from Auckland for Sydney next Thursday, will also take a heavy 'list of travellers. In spite of the. flow towards Australia the number of arrivals at Auckland from Sydney is being well maintained, the Aorangi bringing about 350 passengers on -Monday. The cruise liner Strathnaver, arriving at Auckland from Brisbane tomorrow morning, has 981 passengers, the largest total of any cruise ship this'season.
