R.S.A. WOMEN'S CLUB

The first-meeting in the New Year lof the Returned Soldiers' Women's Club took place yesterday afternoon in the clubrooms; High Street, Lower Hutt, when an enthusiastic gathering of members met' to enjoy a pleasant and informal social ■ afternoon and to plan subsequent meetings. The wide clubroom. looked ■■ particularly charming with bright sunshine streaming in through the open windows and electric fans tempering the heat with a cool flow of air, while tall vases of tawnyshaded gladioli provided an attractive colour, motif. The chair was taken by the vice-president, Mrs. Ray Brown, who was wearing a smart coat-frock of fuchsia crepe and wide-brimmed hat to tone.

Mrs. A. Foster, president of the Taita Women's Institute, was a guest of the afternoon and was wearing' a black and white ensemble.

The meeting opened with the singing of the New" Zealand"". National Anthen, "God Defend New Zealand,-"

by the members) after which the chairwoman welcomed the visitors and wished all present a happy New' Year. A number of suggestions for future meetings were put forward, including a picnic day and the organising of a competition (for articles costing under two shillings to make) which will help in stocking stalls at the forthcoming bazaar. It was decided that the next meeting in February would take the form of a card afternoon with bridge and "500" as the principal games. A -delightful rendering of folk-songs was given by Mrs. Stedman toaktenly appreciative audience, and the-singer was presented with a dainty shoulder spray of pelargonium, larkspur, and maidenhair fern., Afternoon tea was followed by informal discussion until the singing of the National Anthem concluded the meeting. Among those present were Mesdames W. Evans, V. Vinsen, Parkin, R. Mustard, A. Robins, M. C. Ronning, M. Parry, and E. Gandy. Studio Dance.

Many young friends attended; -the party given at Miss Eva Draper's studio on Tuesday night by Mr. and Mrs. W. Smith, of Lower Hutt, in honour of their twin sons, Kenneth and Maurice. Mrs: Smith (who was wearing a gown of green printed crepe finished with corded silk to tone) welcomed the guests at the entrance to the dancing-floor, and was assisted by her daughters, Mrs. W. J. Edmonds (in sage green crepon) and Miss Pauline Smith (lettuce-green marocain). > The studio was decorated in cream and Orange tones, while , scarlet . gladioli and dahlias decked the tables in the supper room.
