DAVIDSON, Auctioneer. KILLED BY BOMB . . ■• ♦ -\ —, ITALIAN VENDETTA A SCATTERING EXPLOSION , (From "The Post's" Represenlative.) SYDNEY,' January 20. A' bomb explosion, believed to be the outcome 'of a 'vendetta between a Black Hand gang in: North Queensland and other Italians there, resulted in the death of Vincenzo Dagostino, 35. The bombing seems a' link in a chain' of '.violent deeds in the: northern sugar-cane areas since the vendetta began' with the bombing •ol a Mrs. Bacchiella in 1934. This was followed by the shooting at close range of Dominico Scarcella, a farmer, in June, 1935. Following this outrage came the murder of Rancesco Guigkelmo Femino in a canefleld workers' barracks in December, 1936. The vendetta, 'which breaks out after a lull of some months, has averaged practicaly one victim a year. It is believed that those opposing the Black Hand gang now have the advantage in the vendetta, and that the last two murders were committed by someone who had taken the initiative in countering threats made by the gang. Dagostino was closely questioned at several inquests held on previous victims, but refused to divulge any information. Many Italians in the north believed that he was the leader ot the Black Hand Gang. Dagostino was sleeping on a stretcher alongside a galvanised iron wall of a room at the rear of a baker's shop. Under cover of rain, the perpetrator placed a bomb against the galvanised iron wall. He then sneaked off into the darkness and'a few minutes later the explosion occurred. It blew a hole three feet square, right 'against Dagostino's bed, wrecking the bed, and mortally wounding Dagostino. Half a dozen holes in the roof indicated the strength of the explosion. A concrete block, about 251b in weight, had been placed on top of the bomb, and this was shattered into many pieces, some of which pelted through the windows of the next building. As in similar outrages in this district, the police met a wall of silence in their investigations. They believe that the silence of these North Queensland Italians is a result of terror that they will be victimised. Germany has 88,300,000 liens, a greater number than any other European nation.' England comes next with 74,900,000, France i third with; 69,000,000. The order is reversed, however, when the number of hens is related to the population. There are 187 hens to every 100 Englishmen, 166 hens to every 100 Frenchmen, ana 134 to every 100 Germans. These figures are issued in connection with the fifth annual exhibition of small animals held at Leipzig from January 14 to 16 next. Six thousand chickens, geese and turkeys, 5000 pigeons and canaries, and 6000 rabbits, goats and silkworms will be on show. The exhibition is being held under the auspices of the National Association, of German-SmalLAnimal Breeders.
