DEFINITE DECREASE
DISCUSSION BY BOARD

AUCKLAND, January 25.
' A'definite decrease in the number of applicants for the nursing profession and a reduction in the number of nurses employed owing to the unforeseen number of resignations were reported by the house committee at the meeting. . of. the Auckland Hospital Board today. The board discussed the possibility of allowing first-year nurses a week's leave at' the end of their first six months' service.
■ -The-committee's report, which was adopted, recommended that, the Government -should -be. asked to establish a nurses' preliminary training school to .fijl th.c. gajp. between the. time of leaving school and starting hospital training. •" ' ' , ' The'nursing staff numbered 350 at the beginning of .1937; the-report said. In 'November the number was 391, which was sufficient-for the-require-ments- of--a -slight .reduction in hours. Recently, owing tp.an unforeseen number, of. resignations; <the, number had dropped, fo 380. ~ , '
