MIRAMAR ESPERANTISTS
The Miramar.. Esperanto; Society opened its 1938 season > last night in St. Aidan's Hall, Miramar Avenue. The president,. Mr. Bertram Potts,' J.P., F.8.E.A., in welcoming members and friends, referred to the formation of the society on December 15 last, the birthday of the late Dr. Zamenhof,- the author of the international auxiliary language, Esperanto, and to the energetic work of the committee. He briefly outlined the important part that Esperanto was playing today^in many spheres of international ''Operations. The secretary of the Miramar Society, Mr. J. E. Wells, congratulated Mr. Potts on his appointment as president of the -New* Zealand Esperanto Association, an honour which had been received by Mr. Potts at the eighth New Zealand Esperanto Congress recently held in Christchurch. Greetings to the new -society were received from the Wellington Esperanto Club, the Hutt. Valley , Esperanto Club, and.: the N.Z.E.Ai Members received the first issue of the society's weekly organ "La Kroniko" ("The Chronicle"). Mr.-W. L. Edmanson, J.P., F.8.E.A., father of the movement in Wellington, congratulated the new society on its formation. He stated that he had been privileged to use Esperanto for pleasure as well as business while in Europe and he could testify to the practicability and world-wide use of the language.
Classes were organised under the tuition of Mr. James E. Wells, Mrs. A. Wells, Mr. James Mackay, and Mr. Potts, and satisfactory progress reported. A display of Esperanto books and brochures was. an interesting feature of the evening.
