"WISDEN'S"
NEW PUBLISHERS
In tht years that have'passed since it was first published, ' "Wisden's Cricketers' Almanack" has • become something in the nature of a Bible for all those who delve into cricket records and performances and derive much pleasure from the studious thought they jive to the. game. \ It will be of interest to them, therefore, that Messrs. J. Whitaker and Sons, Ltd., publishers of "Whitaker's. Almanack," haye taken over the publishing of "Wisden's." John Wisden, a small man, gained renown as • a cricketer arid was also a successful cricket instructor. He published the first edition of his almanack on the. game in 1864, and in the intervening years the publication has grown in size from a modest 112 pages to over 1000.
A number of improvements are promised in the edition for 1938. The cover is stronger and more service able; and bears a reproduction of a wood-cut of an okVtime cricketing scene by Eric Ravilious. For easier reference, the'contents are to-be rearranged and the numbering ot the pages is now continuous throughout the book, thus avoiding the previous division into two sections. The text is set in that most legible of type-faces, "Times New Roman," and more illustrations of a-topical nature are included. In addition to a wealth of statistics and reports, the 1938 edition, contains several articles of unusual interest. Among the innovations are a special section devoted to women's cricket and a useful reference list of books about cricket. '
