SYDNEY, January 24.

The Sheffield Shield match was resumed on a good wicket .after weekend rain.

New South Wales in their first innings made 371 (Barnes 110, White 52, Oldfield 6£V

1 Barnes 'was struck on the jaw by a ball from McCormick and retired temporarily. White was struck on the chest by the same bowler.

Bowling for Victoria, FleetwoodSmith tcjok four wickets for 118 runs, Pearson two for 27 and Sievers two for 91.

Victoria in i their first innings made 78 for five wickets (Hassett 30 not out, Pearson 15 not out). O'Brien secured three valuable wickets, Rigg, Lee, and Gregory, for an aggregate of 17 runs.

The ..match between New South Wales and Victoria has a vital bearing on the Sheffield Shield competition. .'New South Wales leads by five points, from Victoria, and Victoria will have another match to play, against South Australia in Adelaide, next monlli. Should New South Wales win against Victoria it will have won the shiold at present held by Victoria.
