CONTROL OF RAGWORT
PENALTIES FOR FAILURE
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
MASTERTON. This Day.
■ The imposition of stiffer penalties on farmers failing to control ragwort on their properties was one of the measures approved by the Wairarapa provincial executive of the Farmers' Union at its meeting yesterday. Several ' speakers declared that spraying with sodium chlorate was a thoroughly practicable and effective method of eradicating ragwort and that farmers who failed to clear their properties were lazy or neglectful. The executive also decided, however, to take up, through toe Agricultural Department, the question of obtaining from the Cawthron Institute supplies of the insect enemy of ragwort (the cinnabar moth). Some members were of opinion that hardship would result in certain instances if penalties were increased, and it was suggested also that dairy farmers were entitled to financial assistance from the State in coping with ragwort.
