PACKET CHEESE
SALE IN BRITAIN
NEW ZEALAND'S SHARE
(From "The Post's" Representative.) . . ■ LONDON, .May 1.
A statement made recently in. New Zealand by Mrs. Newland Fletcher that the Dominion has made no attempt to cater for the increasing demand for packet cheese in Britain has aroused some comment in dairy produce circles in London. There is, perhaps, some ground for the complaint but the actual position is that the bulk of the packet cheese manufactured in England today has New Zealand cheese for its basis.
Packet cheest is becoming increasingly popular in England^-the Board of Trade's figures show that. 297,000 tons were sold in 1935 as against 273,000 tons in 1934—and 32 firms are ..engaged in its manufacture. One of these manufacturers spends annually three times as much On advertising his product as is spent on advertising the whole of New Zealand dairy produce in this country each year. The opinion generally adopted in London is that it would riot be altogether good business for New Zealand farming interests to enter into competition with these firms and to withhold cheese from them for the purpose of processing it themselves, particularly when so large a proportion of the Dominion's cheese is bought for that very purpose.
Actually there has been a New Zealand, packet cheese on the English market for the past three years. It is guaranteed to be manufactured fromNew Zealand cheese, and if is sold as such. '
