THE STAGE PLAY.

Lillian Hellman, author of "The Children's Hour," has selected a small town of 5000 people, with adult characters, for her latest ■ play, "Days to Come," which was staged on Broadway. Her views of- the stage play are . interesting. "One doesn't use the speaking stage any more as a medium of pure amusement or as a scene for spectacle," she said. "The films are vastly superior in both these fields. Technically, the theatre hasn't a ghost of a show against the screen any more than it has as a source of revenue; but it has one great warrant for its being, one excuse for its continued existence— the theatre will survive as a place for the expression and exchange of ideas. In the theatre you can present an idea for the consideration of intelligent audiences, which, of course, is completely outside the gaudiest dreams of possibility in Hollywood."
