"CARMEN SYLVA"
QUEEN OF RUMANIA
Queen Marie of Rumania, whose health is causing some anxiety to her family and her doctors, was well known some years ago as Carmen Sylva, the authoress (states an exchange). She used to write exquisite little stories for children, too, one of the best being "Niku the Smiler," illustrated by Mabel Lucie Attwell, for whose work the Queen has great admiration, and who has stayed with the Royal authoress. Queen Marie is also an enthusiastic gardener, and a year or two ago, when staying in Rumania, an English woman journalist had the privilege of being personally . conducted round the gardens by the Queen, who showed remarkably good working knowledge of trees and flowers.
The Queen Mother of Rumania frequently dresses in national costume, which becomes her well, is a collector of some note, and has gathered about her many treasures, mainly for the adornment of her apartments. When she travels a miniature caravan of the most-prized possessions goes with her, and soon after arrival at her destination she has transformed her rooms as nearly^ as possible into replicas of those at home
