WINNER BY AFURLONG
Clarion Call, completed the jumping double at the meeting by adding the Wanganui Steeplechase to the Century Hurdles. As he won by 'nearly a furlong, it was a. decisive, .victory. Yet if Brigadore had not' fallpn at the second-last fence there- might not have been a great deal in it;? arid Clarion 'Call had a : "life" when he made a careless leap, at ,the:.last fence: and hooked, the batten a foot lower than the top of the brush. Clarion Call's jumping, except for the last fence, was beautiful to watch. He measured his obstacles accurately, and he never iooke'd like going out of the contest. '' After leading for. the first round, he did not try to go .with .Brigadore on the second round, but he assumed charge again three ■ fences from home on the final round. It was rather surprising that he was- not the favourite.,. .. .;'..' l ...
'Clarion Call is» .the first horse to have won this, double, but •it -is ■ only in recent years that the two-races have been run on different days. F. McHugh secured the ride on him as a result of the accident to Jenkins, and it enabled him to reqord a riding. treble at the meeting in three mounts, a rather unusual hundred per cent, record.
Royal Banquet, the ; favourite,, was second only because Brigadore fell. He did not jump as well as 'on Saturday and was always scratching over the last round to hold his place.- Brigadore's rider was a- little, too keen, on him, and the trouble that finally came was probably due to his trying to' hold on to Clarion Call's quarters. Otherwise it was a very promising performance. . Riotous, who jumped much below, ■ his best, ..was = third, ■ and Rioghail,: who.is lacking-in pace on the flat, was not far away. ■.■ •■
