BECOMING MILDER

Special forecast for Wellington:— Moderate southerly winds, but winds decreasing: in force and becoming more variable in direction by tomorrow. Weather cold with occasional light showers at first, but improving and becoming: somewhat milder.

The -general forecast for the Dominion as a whole, issued at noon, today for the ensuing twenty-four hours, is for light to moderate south-westerly to south-easterly winds, but winds later will become more variable, with a tendency for' northerlies in the South Island. Some further showers are probable at first on the East Coast between Cook Strait and East Cape, _ but otherwise the^ weather will be fair to fine with somewhat. milder temperatures. An anticyclone has been moving across the Tasman Sea on to New Zealand during the last two days, and pressure this morning was much higher everywhere than was the case yesterday. South-westerly to south-easterly winds have prevailed. Yesterday these were strong in many places about and to the north of Cook Strait, but elsewhere they were only light to moderate in force. Winds were still fresh this morning on the East Coast between Cook Strait and East Cape, but generally speaking they have decreased, and in the South Island are already becoming more variable in direction. The weather has been brilliantly fine in western districts, but in eastern districts and in the far south showers or misty rain have been experienced. Low temperatures have prevailed, with many frosts. Auckland's weather yesterday was fine and clear, although cold, the wind being alight one from the south-south-east. Wellington had an unpleasant day, a moderate to strong and cold southerly wind being accompanied by frequent showers. Conditions, however, improved somewhat in the evening. Qnly 1.5 hours of bright sunshine were recorded. , ' It was clear in Christchurch early in the morning, but it clouded over later. In the evening it cleared again and a frost was experienced at night, but by this morning it had clouded over once again and misty rain was falling. A light south-westerly wind [ has prevailed there and temperatures have remained low. Dunedin has had cold and cloudy weather with a light south-westerly wind also.
