FARM LABOURERS
INSPECTION OF QUARTERS
DEPARTMENT'S BIG TASK
(By Telegraph.)
(Special to the "Evening Post.")
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day.
A comprehensive inspection of farm labourers' living quarters throughout New Zealand is to be made by Labour Department officers in accordance witli the provisions of the Agricultural Workers Act, .according to instructions received by the "Department's office at New Plymouth. Although no precise information is available it is estimated that •in Taranaki the inspection will mean visits to more than 3000 farms. So far no announcement has been made of the commencement of the inspection in other districts, but it will probably be within the next few days.
The district administered from New Plymouth extends from Mokoia to Mokau, and from Whangamomona to the coast. The big task will probably be done entirely by the present staff. The intention is to administer the legislation in a reasonable way. Under the Act it is the duty of every employer of farm labour to provide sufficient and suitable accommodation, except in case of employees who can conveniently sleep at their own homes ot provide their own accommodation.
