EXTENSIVE WORKS

ESTIMATE OF £1,190,000

(By Telegraph—i'ress Association.) AUCKLAND, June 8.

A programme of port development which includes three, major wharf extension schemes, estimated to cost £1,190,000, was decided upon by the Auckland Harbour Board at a special meeting. It is proposed to promote a private Bill to empower the board to borrow £ 1,000,000 to enable the works to be undertaken as and when required.

The schemes, which were outlined recently by the late chairman, Mr. C. G. Macindoe, provide for the construction of an export wriarf and other essential works at a cost of £483,000, special accommodation for passenger and tourist vessels, costing £275,000, and the provision of deep-water berthage on the eastern waterfront by reclamation and the construction of breastworks and quays at a cost of £432,000.

As the outcome of the plan to build an export wharf from the eastern reclamation between the vehicular ferry wharf and King's Wharf, negotiations have be.en proceeding between the board and the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Ccrr.pany for leasing 6f part cr the reclamation for the purpose of ceo s'xuction by the company of a large diiry produce store equipped with up-to-date plant for the handling and more efficient loading of butter and cheese. A report explaining the company's need of more storage accommodation for butter and cheese and giving the cost of the export wharf and other necessary works was submitted to the board by the superintendent and engineer. Mr. D. Holderness, and was adopted. The board authorised the works set out in the report and decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for ils sanction to the raising of the necessary loan moneys. It also granted to the Auckland Farmers' Freezing Company a lease of an area of approximately 5J acres for a term of 21 years with perpetual right of renewal for the same term, the.rental for the first, two years of the lease to be £2250 a year, and £4500 for the remainder of the 21 years.
