OUTSIZE IN FLEAS
The remarkable dimensions of a flea whose habitat is in the Mt. Cook region, were described in the "Oamaru Mail" some months ago. Whether the pargaraph spread and whether the size of the flea became magnified with repetition would be difficult to ascertain, but the fact remains that the flea eventually grew to such gigantic proportions as to attract the attention of a foreign newspaper. The journal, which is a German one, informs its readers that fleas nearly two feet long that jump Bft 6in are among the fauna of New Zealand. Details were then given as follows: "A message has come from New Zealand that in the Mount Cook district a 'new kind of flea has been discovered. They call it the hemidea magacephala. These fleas are 60 centimetres long, have teeth locking like little saws, and jump 2 metres 60 centimetres. We Europeans will have to be prepared for something if we ever get one of these in our ear. The flea-circuses should be well advanced by the discovery."
