LOSS OF LIFE MUCH LOWER THAN WAS FEARED

United Press Association.—By Electric Telegraph.—Copyright. (Received June 8, 10.40 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. The total damage done by the volcanic eruptions at Rabaul is now estimated at about £200,000. The Administrator of the Mandated Territory of New Guinea, BrigadierGeneral W. R. McNicoll, is determined to re-establish Rabaul as the capital, and plans have been made for the early return of the male portion of the population. The death roll among the natives' is much lower {han had been feared, and it is now estimated that not more than 31 natives lost their lives. The channel in the harbour to Rabaul is regarded as safe.
