ARTIFICIAL RUBBER
«. AN ENGLISH PRODUCTION An artificial rubber, a product of coal, is to be produced on a commercial scale in England. It is a compound which is claimed to have a better resistance to oils, heat, ozone, chemicals, and certain solvents than rubber and can be milled and processed more easily. Its advantages over natural rubber are claimed to offset its higher price of about 3s 6d per pound. It is not. a rubber substitute v but it can be bonded to rubber and used to give it a protective covering or lining, and its introduction is considered likely to extend the uses of rubber in the engineering trades. In producing an artificial rubber oJ this type, which does not seek to compete • with natural .rubber but to improve on it for special purposes, England will be following the example of the United States,, as opposed to that of Germany and Russia. Both these countries are aiming at self-sufficiency through the replacement of the natural product. Motor-cars, aeroplanes, chemical factories, and printing are among the industries for which American experience has shown that this type oi artificial rubber has advantages.
