STEEPLES DOUBLE

CLARION CALL'S OBJECTIVE

Though the jumping events are again a little light in numbers,' the fields on the -whole are most satisfactory for the concluding day of the Wanganui Jockey Club's Winter Meeting at Wanganui tomorrow: "■ This is the more important day of the fixture, with the Wanganui ■ Steeplechase as the feature item, and if the weather'is reasonably fine a very large crowd is'expected to witness the racing.. Whatever.the weather, however, it could hardly be worse than Saturday's, and that did not deter quite an excellent muster of enthusiasts. . ■ ■ Following Saturday's mixture ofweather, there Was sunshine and a drying wind thrbughoutSunday, and it. is therefore possible ihaf the track, will beL in improved order for tomorrow, unless much further rain'should fall. Saturday's racing showed what a' good all-weather, track; Wanganui has,, for. the going, was -never really heavy, though soft' and in places a' little shifting. ; ■ '■ ' - ' ■ Considerable ' ■intrprovements-- have / been'made at the course, including the enlargement" of the motor park to accommodate nearly twice as many cars as previously. . . .' Ethiop and Hunting Queen are'others m form, and Journet and Ruaform are; liable to run improved races. , Red. Clarion Call will be in keen request to complete the jumping double in'the Wanganui Steeplechase, though he will be having.his first race over country in eighteen months. Royal Banquet is sure to be hard again, for the extra weight- will not trouble : him as it would - some, and His rider appeared keen-not to show him tip too much on Saturday. Sporting Song, Riotous (twice winner of the race previously), and Brigadore are all prospects as well, with the last-named, under his light, weight, liable, to surprise. The best backed will be Clarion Call and Royal Banquet. . .

Pukeko is the best form horse among the others, several of whom will be.at a disadvantage if the track is still soft. Tiger. Gain, who has a £ood record on the course,'might'be tne likeliest improver, but Le~ Grand, ■a stablemate. Of International's,- is one who is always liable'to bob up. Those possessing the attribute of speed from the barrier are Dawning Light, Te Huia, Race Call, Sporting Gift, Colleen Gain, and Parakino, arid of these Te Huia, who led into the straight over a furlong further on Saturday, may be the best proposition. The Sandwich Man seems top unlucky and is also not' always a good beginner. Helios and Fleeting Arrow are improvers in the field. A pair who may be favoured are.Te Huia and Sportinc Gift.
