PETONE'S SECOND WIN

Hail and rain greeted Petone and /Wellington on the Petone Oval. Considering the slushy conditions, the standard of football iv'as good, Petone registering a well-merited win. From the kick-off and while the footing was good enough, Petone moved fast, and forwards and backs worked with splendid combination. Early in the match Pollock kicked a penalty goal, and a little later two excellent passing runs by the home backs nearly brought results, after which Knowles scored. Beyond a couple of sorties, Wellington had to do most of the defence, and they managed to keep Petone out, but near the end of the spell Cleland followed a kick over the line and scored. Pollock converting. Soon after the second half began Trapp kicked a penalty for Wellington. Play .was more even in this spell with both sets of forwards doing good work. Petone, mainly because of surer fielding by the backs, looked the more dangerous team when rushes were under way. Wellington tried hard to stem the tide of defeat, but could not circumvent the defence. Petone made victory secure when a loose rush took play to the Wellington twenty-five, where Pollock high-kicked and Knowles outpaced the opposition to the touch-down. The kick missed. Play continued brisk, though loose, until the end. The result was:— Petone 14, Wellington 3. Mr. A. de Clifton was the referee.
