GREAT NORTHERN WIN

BOOMERANG'S BRILLIANCE

(Cy Teloorapli.) (Special from "Early Bird. ) AUCKLAND, June 6. The Auckland Racing Club's Great Northern Meeting opened on Saturday, the weather being cold and showery. Despite the failures of most oi favourites, betting was spirited, tne totalisator handling £50,341 for seven events against £44,251 for eight races last year. BACKERS START WELL. Sky Pilot started off well for backers by winning the opening event, the Greenlane Steeplechase, for which his price was comparatively short. Saint Musk led most of the way, being clear on the hill the second time, and then Sky Pilot joined him. Saint Musk took on the boarded wing at the fencs at the bottom of the straight and put his rider over the other side. The favourite then went on to wm well from Emancipation, who finished nicely. Kinkle, who was always handy, did best of the remainder and he can still be improved. London weakened in the final round to get a moderate fourth, and Domo revealed stamina by finishing fifth, after being badly tailed off in the first lap. Saint Musk was tired when he bungled the penultimate fence and he might not have been better than third with a stand up. Lucidus was handy when he dropped his rider three fences from home, bky Pilot should win again at the meeting. * LIKED THE MUD. Erndale displayed the family partiality for the mud, by winning the Jervois Handicap in a close finish with Small Boy, who came home strongly. Farland and Pirate King quickly took up the running from Very Glad, and, making for the home turn, Erndale had run up into fourth place. Coming into the straight the leaders were under pressure, and Erndale had charge at the distance, to draw clear. Small Boy came at him with a late challenge, but Erndale was holding his own at the post. Gay Rebel was not sighted until the straight was reached aid he made up a lot of ground in the final stages. Alyth ran a fine race, finishing-Vide out, half a length behind Gay Rebel. Very Glad, Captain Bruce, Farland, Bryce Street, Pirate King, and Strathire were in the bunch on the heels of the placed division. Emdale.. a half-brother to Paddon and White Comet, completed his task nicely. Gay Rebel was an unlucky runner. lne little-fancied Captain Bruce went a surprisingly good race, but the favouiite, Farland, and Pirate King failed to run on. Perhaps it was toe- bad draw at the barrier that beat them. LOT IN HAND. Collision was an odds-on favourite in the Penrose Hurdles; and he won without much trouble. He was pulling hard in the early stages and was kept well back, but four fences from home it was merely a question of getting the leaders at any time. He joined Gay Broney in front at the second to last hurdle, and then won, hard held, from Gay Broney, Lady Ruler, and Red Fox, The winner confirmed the previous opinion that he is a class hurdler. Gay Broney shaped well for his first effort a# a hurdler, and so did Red Fox. Spearcourt failed to show any dash. HOW NORTHERN WAS WON. Sandy Dix outstayed the Great Northern Hurdles field. He was always prominent. Setting out on the final round, he and Huskle were carting the field along, .Modern Maid, the early pacemaker, having retired at this juncture; However, coming into the straight prior to straightening up for the run to the last fence, Sandy Dix had only a slight advantage over Jolly Beggar (rails), Lord Val, and Huskie (outside). Shaking off this trio, ne ran on for a decisive victory, giving C. Thomson some compensation for his fall on Clarion Call at the last obstacle 12 months ago. Sandy Dix has raced fairly consistently, but this was easily his most important victory- He ■ will probably be. taken to Trentham, and must be considered a Winter Hurdles prospect. Huskie went a solid race throughout, und he might have got closer to the winner had he taken the final fence better. His jumping was smooth all the way. Jolly Beggar had a great run, always being handy, but once again the weight told the. tale and he could not concede the necessary poundage to the pair that finished in front of him. The southerner went a fine race, and he is outstanding among present-day hurdlers. Lord Val ran almost up to his best form, and was not quite good, enough-. Six furlongs from home, ho and Jolly Beggar appeared to be going best of the leading division. Just after landing over the next hurdle Erination swung into the rails and checked Lord Val,. who was immediately behind. However, at the best, he could not have beaten the winner, although he might have been second. Master Musk, who finished fifth, about four lengths behind Lord Val, will be considerably improved by the race. He is one to remember later at the fixture. Erination went well for two miles, and Pahu was staying on a Jong way back, but Modern Maid failed to stay, Valpeen was prominent most Of the way, and Royal Limond .plodded along in the rear, both pulling up in good shape. Disaster came early in the race, Roxy, Tout le Monde, and Lap Up fallIng in that order as the • big field charged down on the first hurdle. Killadar went out at the second fence, and the, only Other mishap was when High Quality fell two fences from home when well back.. IMPRESSIVE PERFORMANCE. Boomerang, last in the first furlong, proved himself brilliant enough to win the Cornwall Handicap in a very tight finish. It was a really brilliant performance. The race was run in rain and visibility was poor.' Boomerang first came into the picture when he was going down the field passing the half-mile. At the home turn he was handy, lying behind Royal Dance, Te Hai, De Friend, Valmint, Enge, and King Rey. Just behind him were Horowhenua and Tooley Street. Over the last half-furlong, De Friend, Boomerang" (centre), and Valmint were locked together. In the last couple of strides Boomerang just got his head in front of Valmint and De Friend. There was daylight back to King Rey, who ran a fine race under his impost. Enge was right up fifth in advance of Te Hai, Knight of Australia, Royal Dance, Jewelled Girdle, arid Horowhenua. The winner's effort was outstanding. De Friend and Valmint also went nicely, and of the others Knight of Australia probably went the best, as he was cut back at the start. Royal Appellant and Gay' Rose, badly drawn, never managed to get out of the ruck. The bracketed pair, Tooley Street and Horowhenua, drew small marbles and were in difficulties all the way. TRACK FORM REPEATED. All Irish ran up to his track essays I when he captured the Hunt Club Hurdles at. a good price from the favourite, Rozel, and Lady England. Lochiel Lad showed some promise. Both winner and runner-up should be impoved by the race. Cynical Kid went fairly well, but Tangled was in the rear most of the way. ALL-THE-WAY WIN. Versant jumped out first in the Members' Handicap, and making every post a winning one, he was never caught. Greek Gold. Black Thread, Prince Acre, and Whirling trailed him to the straight, and then he held on to score an overdue win. He revelled in the going which was very bad at this stage. Whirling finished strongly to head of! Prince Acre over the last bit for second, while Black Thread weakened into fourth position, ahead of Greek Gold, Kiltowyn, Adalene, and Surella. Of this lot. the likely improvers are Surella and Kiltowyn, but Whirling's effort was that of a good horse. RESULTS IN DETAIL.
