ROTOMA'S BRILLIANT RUN
A brilliant run round the field from well back secured victory for Rotoma in the Borough Hack Handicap. They were so strung out on the home turn that Rotoma's chance looked forlorn, but the filly was coming along very fast as they swung into the straight, and she continued the effort to cut down Airing in the last fifty yards and score by nearly a length.
Rotoma only recently resumed racing after having an»enforced spell during the autumn as the result of an enlarged hock, and a second at Foxton led up to Saturday's win, which was at a lucrative price. She is a three-year-old half-sister by Gainscourt to Llyn Dv, a useful horse several seasons ago, and she is owned by Mr. C. Cooper, of Masterton, who is having his first venture in Turf fortunes with her. A unique feature of her ownership is that she came into the hands of Mr. Cooper as the result of a double gift. -. ■ '■ Airing was being hailed as the winner when he came through along the fence on the inner of the pacemaking Te Hu'ia, but he was unable to withstand the dazzling bid of Rotoma. Actually he had been first to show out and then settled down third behind Te Huia and Race Call to the straight. Winsome Lv, soon fourth in the running, was a creditable third a couple of lengths back. Te Huia weakened into fourth, and Dictate and Flying Chief were finishing well next. Flying Chief coming from a long way back. . Ngatirahlri and Race Call were clcsest of the rest. Taro and Dawning Light were early in good positions but faded. Malibu was showing up for a short space on the home turn.
