THREE FIRES
MILK BAR BLAZE
QUICK WORK-BY BRIGADE
Three outbreaks of fire occurred in Wellington during the weekend, but none developed into a serious blaze. In each case the Fire Brigade was quickly on the scene. At 12.53 : a.m. today a call was received to the Crystal Milk Bar, 112 Willis Street, a brick building of two floors. The smoke was so thick that the use of respirators was necessary. The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before damage had been done to the bar and its contents by smoke and water. The ceiling also suffered. The bar, which is owned by the McGill Estate and occupied by Mr. Stathis Gerondis, is insured for £1000 in the Standard Office. Mr. Gerondis left the premises at about 11.30 p.m. for his room above the t>ar. He was awaken-' ed by the engine's siren and discovered his room to b e full of smoke. He hurriedly donned a dressing-gown over his pyjamas and climbed out on to thu verandah. The fire was caused by an electric radiator being left on. At 9.5 p.m. yesterday the brigade was called out to a house at 81 Moxharn Avenue. The building is a twostoreyed one, with two self-contained flats. Mr. G. W. Sollitt, the owner, occupies one, and th e other is occupied by Mr. S. Wilton. The 'fire brok« out in Mr. Wilton's flat, and was caused by a defective hearth. Slight damage was. done to the sitting-room and contents. - . At 8.55 p.m. on Saturday the brigade dealt with a fire in- a motor-car at a service station at the corner of Taranaki and Wakefield Streets. The outbreak, which was easily extinguished without much damage being done, was caused by petrol overflowing on to the wiring system.
