WOMEN'S HOCKEY

SATURDAY'S MATCHES

Heavy rain, sleet, and occasional flakes of snow did not prevent the competitions conducted by the Wellington Women's Hockey Association being held on Saturday afternoon. In spite of the conditions, however, some excellent games were witnessed. Largely owing to the state of the ground, play was scrappy in the opening stages of the game between Hutt United and Toa at Kilbirnie, miss-hitting, especially in the circle, being frequent. United had the better of the game almost all the way, Miss M. Mai pas and Miss K. McClelland scoring in the first half, and Miss McClelland again in the second. Toa were severely handicapped by their lack of a goalie, but nevertheless the score of 3-0 in Unitcd's favour was a fairly accurate indication of the capabilities of the two teams.

C.O.G. again gave an excellent display, this time against Training College, and although the result was a foregone conclusion, yet the match gave the College players an opportunity to give a fine exhibition of teamwork and skill. . Following a series of right-wing attacks, Miss I. Pickering scored two goals for C.0.G., and although the Training College goalie stopped several hard drives, the odds were too great, and a third goal was soon registered by Miss Morris. Further goals by Misses Pickering, Morris (2). and McLellan (2) gave C.O.G. an 3-0 lead at half-time. In the second half Misses McLellan and Morris (2) scored again, the game ending 11-0 in C.O.G.'s favour. At Woburn a hard tussle took place between T.O.G. 2 and Hutt Valley, the former finally carrying off the match by the narrow margin of 2-1. The Hutt team, showed up surprisingly well against the^ more experienced T.O.G. players, their defensive play being very sound. Miss B. Mills scored T.O.G.'s first goal early in the match, and Miss S. Jackson netted later, giving the Technical team a decided advantage at half-time. Hutt took up the offensive, and after repeated attacks Miss B. Snow scored, the ball rebounding off a defending player's stick into

the net. Despite several chances, Hult could not equal the T.O.G. total. Poneke defeated University by 5 goals lo 2 at Newtown Park, their play i in general being superior to that id their opponents. Results were as follows: — Senior A. Hutt United 3. Toa 0. C.O.G. 11. Training College 0. T O.G. V 2) 2, Hutt Valley 1. Poneke 5, University 2. Senior B. Upper Hutt V, Wenerei 0. St. Joseph's 1.
