TAKING OF HOUSES

SCHOOL EXTENSION

'COMPENSATION SOUGHT

Five house properties on the northern side of Emmett Street, adjoining the Newtown School, were the subjects of claims made in the Compensation Court today by their former owners against the Wellington Education Board which has taken the land and buildings for school extension purposes. The amounts claimed for the five properties, Nos. 5, 7, 9, 13, and 15,! totalled £4350. ' | Mr. Justice Ostler presided over the Court and had with him as assessors Messrs. H. E. Leighton and A. A. Gellatly. Presenting the claim of Mary Hanrahan for £1100 for No. 5, Mr. C. J. O'Regan said that the section measured 34ft by 79ft. . ' £1100 was also claimed by Ernest Wray for No. 7. It measured 34ft by 81ft 6in, said Sir Kenneth Douglas, who appeared for Wray. On behalf of Lily Martha Hirst, Mr. F. C. Spratt presented a claimed for £750 for No. 9. The land measured 17ft Bin by 81ft 6in, he said. For No. 13, measuring 17ft by 80ft 6in, a claim for £600 was made by Mr. E. K. Kirkcaldie on behalf of August Wilkening. Mr. O'Regan claimed £800 on behalf of Nellie Catherine Jacobsen for No. 15, the land measuring 17ft by 79ft, 2in. Counsel pointed out the advantage of the sites because of their proximity to churches, schools, theatres, and shops, and because, they said, it .was impossible now to obtain new pro-1 perties as small as some of those in ' dispute, on account of the 40ft frontage | requirement. It was stated that all the houses concerned were sound, though some had not been given as much attention in the past two years as usual, because the owners knew of the Education Board's intention to take them.

Mr. T. C. A. Hislop appeared for the board.

Evidence was called for the claimants.
