SHIPWRECK RELIEF

DUNEDIN, This Day.

At the annual meeting of the Shipwreck Relief Society of New Zealand, the chairman said that since its inauguration in 1902 the society had spent £9000 on relief.and almost £1400 in special donations, which made a total of over £10,000. It was thought in 'some directions that bodies such as the society should not accumulate large sums of money, but he pointed out that in 1929 claims amounting to almost £4000 were paid out. The society, by its work, had fully justified itself. They all knew from past experience that the wreck of a large vessel might call for the immediate expenditure of several thousand pounds.^ They, must at all times be prepared to. have to assist one.or even two wrecks.

The society's organisation throughout New Zealand had been perfected, and the whole of the fund which had been built up would be spent i£.there was need.. -.
