KARORI GROUND NO. 1

So far no reply has been received by' the W.H.A. from the reserves committee of the City Council concerning the use of No. 1 ground at Karori for men's hockey. The matter was the subject of a deputation to the committee this week. At the last meeting of the W.H.A. Mr. C. P. McKenzie, who headed the deputation, said that in the ■first place this ground was prepared for hockey. The W.H.A. was responsible for it for many years and had contributed a substantial amount towards the maintenance of the ground. This fact, he said, was borne out by the chairman of the committee. The deputation pointed' out that they understood complaints had been made that hockey cut up the ground and as a result it could not be used for cricket. That was not a fact, said Mr. McKenzie, as no complaint had been made by the Cricket Association or the Karori Cricket Club. The committee was informed that the W.H.A. considered that it had not been fairly treated, and that the Women's Hockey Association, that had been allotted the ground, had not applied for it. All the Women's Association did was to ask for a ground as near as possible to the dressing sheds. On the other hand, the W.H.A. had made a particular request for No. 1 ground.

A member of the committee asked if the W.H.A. would be satisfied if the ground was made available for June 12, but Mr, McKenzie said he replied that the association desired the ground for the whole season. "If a satisfactory reply is not received we will tell the council we are not satisfied with the parks and reserves committee and will send a deputation to the council." said Mr. McKenzie. "We are not getting a fair deal at all."

scoring for the side, and he is an accurate shot with either the push or hit stroke. C, Edwards, at centre, is settling down in his new position and is playing good hockey. He is still inclined to stray to the left, but he should soon eradicate this fault, He makes some fine openings for his insides. K. Macdonald (left-wing), who replaced D. Larnach in the Huia match, played a fine game. His trapping of the ball was excellent, and his centring was well-timed and neatly placed. He has a fine turn of speed. Larnach has played some good games in this position, but has a bad habit of hanging on to the ball too long. If he were to eradicate this -fault he would do much better, as his stickwork Is very good and he is very fast off the mark.

The A team has been unlucky with the number of alterations, but they will undoubtedly improve and should do much better as the season progresses. Smith, the goalkeeper, has a bad fault of kneeling down to stop a shot. His play would improve it he would stand up and clear quickly with a kick. The two full-backs, P, Adams and S. McDonald, are very sound and are hard men to pass. .The half-line has been changed about a good deal, but Hamel, Nimmo, and Shaw have all shown good form. Nimmo is always sound at centre, and Shaw is showing up well in his new position at left-half. The forward line has so far been disappointing, but they have been unfortunate with a number of injuries and alterations. When they settle down they should improve. The shooting has been very erratic, and the players should endeavour to rectify this fault. A, Edwards (inside-left) has played some good games and is a dangerous man in the circle.
