SPECIAL OCCASION
A special meeting was held last Wednesday by the Wellington Central branch of the Women's Christian Temperance Union at. the Y.W.C.A., to honour Mrs. Peryman, who during the year will celebrate her 25th year as editor of the "White Ribbon" (the union's monthly paper). Arrangements were made to fittingly celebrate this jubilee.
Mrs. Israel, president, presented Mrs. Peryman wtih a bouquet as a token of appreciation, and Mrs. Peryman suitably replied.
It was announced that the jumble sale held recently had been very successful, and a hearty vote of thanks was given to all those who had helped. A letter was received from the Y.W.C.A. asking the union to help in their approaching "street day" collection. The hope was expressed that members would do so. A delightful programme of , songs and recitations was much enjoyed. Mrs. Colebrook sang "She Shall Have Music Wherever, She Goes," Mozart's "Cradle Song," and Brahms's "Sunday," and Mrs. Ironside and Mrs. Turner sang two duets, "I Am Your Friend" and "Nocturne." Mrs. Long, who recited, was also heartily encored. Mrs. Hault and Mrs. Andrew served afternoon tea. , . ■ Among the visitors were members from other branches, the president of the Brooklyn branch, the secretary of the Wellington branch, the Dominion superintendent, and a visitor from New Plymouth. . Before the meeting concluded Mrs. Barron read a short paper on the founding of the "White Ribbon" after the strenuous fight for the' franchise. AN "AT HOME." A W.CT.U. "at home" was held at Mrs. Murgatroyd's residence, Petone, recently,* there being 17 ladies present. Devotional exercises were conducted by the evangelistic superintendent. Mrs. Jensen presided. A programme was given by Mesdames McConville, Jensen, and Davis, and an' address was given by Mrs. - Jones, who, with her husband, the Rev. H. A. Jones, are on ..furlough from the Indian mission, field. [■ Hearty votes of thanks were accorded the hostess, speaker, and all who had helped. Afternoon tea was served. : ' . A collection of 10s was taken up for the King George V Fund. Afternoon tea was served, the Doxology sung, and the Benediction pronounced. ADDRESS ON "PRAYER." The Wellington branch of the union held its monthly meeting yesterday, when the president gave an interesting address on "Prayer." Several letters were read, one from the League of Nations Union asking for more members. It was decided that an officer would join .and obtain literature for W.CT.U. members to learn more about it. . ■ , ' ■ l' Volunteers were asked to assist In collecting on Y.W.C.A. "Street Day" on June 30. It was decided to invite the district executive to hold its next meeting at the Constable Street rooms. Arrangements were made for. a jumble sale to be held in July. A membership campaign and means for helping the Headquarters Fund were also discussed. Interesting short pieces were read from "White Ribbon" of 40 years ago.
A dainty afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. Hirst.
