FRUIT MARKETS

The Director 'of the Horticulture Division of the Department of Agriculture has received the following report from the fruit inspectors oji the condition of locally-grown fruit and vegetables in Wellington shops and auction rooms and the market- conditions for the month of May, 1937.— During the month a good supply pi apples has been maintained, both cooking and dessert varieties. .The duality in the main has been -mixed mostly due to bruising and russet. Only medium supplies of pears have been offering; the quality and condition have been fairly good, and prices generally firm. Lemons have been in snort supply, and have been mostly of lowgrade fruit. Vegetables of most classes both root and green have been in fairly good supply, and the condition has in the main been satisfactory. The following prices may be taken as a fair average of those obtained at auction during the month: — Apples: Delicious, 4s 6d to 8s per standard case; Cox's Orange, 7s.to Us: Jonathan, 4s to 7s; Dougherty, 4s to 6s; Washington, 6s 6d to 7s 6d; Rome. Beauty, 5s 6d to 7s 6d; Granny Smith, 7s M to 9s 6d; Lord Wolseley, 6s to 7s; Stone Pippin, 6s. to 7s; Dunn's, 5s to 7s Pears: Winter Cole. 11s to 13s; Winter Nelis, 8s to lls;, P. Barry, 6s 6d to 7s 6d; Vicar of Winkfleld, 5s 6d to 6s 6d; lemons, choice 24s per case, others 10s to 17s; grapes, Is 10d to 2s 4d per lb; cauliflowers,. 5s to lls per sack; lettuce, 3s to 10s per case; spinach, 2s 6s; carrots, 5s to 8s; parsnips, 4s to 6s- 6d; cabbages, 2s to f-s per sack; Brussels sprouts, 8s to 12s per sugar-bag; celery, 6s to Ms per banana case; pumpkin, red squash ys to 12s per sack, greys 7s 6d to 9s; onions, 8s per cental bag; potatoes. £8 to £8 10s per ton; tomatoes, hothouse 9s to lls per half-case, outdoor large ripe 4s to ss, outdoor round ripe 5s 6d to 7s.
