ORGANISED BEGGING
DISCLOSURES IN VIENNA
VIENNA, June 2,
The arrest of two thieves charged with, stealing valuable jewellery and £40 in cash revealed the existence of a highly-organised1 beggar underworld. The victims of the theft were a man and his wife, who supplemented a comfortable pension by professional begging. Their practice was to dress in poor clothes, drive a luxurious motorcar to various villages, leave the car on the outskirts, and visit the houses, plead starvation, and state that they had no homes. They bought jewellery at a number of houses and also other possessions from the profits.
The police also have discovered a market where "starving children" are hired to beggars at fees ranging from 6d to 2s daily.
