PARTIES AT CANTON ISLAND

A message from the leader of the New Zealand solar eclipse expedition at Canton Island, Mr. C. W. B.Michie, states: — ■
"Last evening the officers of H.M.S. Wellington entertained the officers o£ the Avocet and members of the American and New Zealand expeditions. The quarter-deck was dressed for the occasion, which furnished an opportunity to meet and exchange views. :
"The coronograph, with covers ,to break the wind, and the darkroom Are completed. Mr. I. L. Thomsen, of the Dominion Observatory, Wellington, is making meteorological observations hourly. These show only a few degrees' range in temperature both day and night. ' "While another'member of the expedition, Buddie, was blowing specimen eggs at the edge of the lagoon he. was attacked by a four-foot sea eel. He scrambled to safety. * "The Americans have commenced eclipse drill. The New Zealanders.will start tomorrow.
"We are unable to sleep owing to rats and hermit crabs. Some of the Americans are sleeping on the roof of the workshop."
