TROTTING BREVITIES
The Addington track has improved with horses working on it, but further rain would be disastrous.
Todd Lonzia has been absent about eighteen months. He was foaled in 1927, so is not old as trotters go. Although De Soto has no immediate engagements, it is reported that he is training on satisfactorily # and gives every indication of remaining sound.
The Trotting Calendar for the present season is close to its finish, and at the Ashburton Meeting high-class performers will be seen out for the last time until the August Meeting at Addington. Ginger Jack's 3min 25sec for a mile and a half on the Addington training track was the best effort recorded on a recent morning. Some big money has been offered and refused for this fellow. ' ' , Francis Lincoln has been transferred from the stable of L. A. Maidens to N. C. Price's establishment at New Brighton. Francis Lincoln has plenty of speed and stamina, and, in the opinion of Maidens, is good enough to win a'race, but he is a difficult horse to get right. . Lucky Love has been eight times placed this season for £120, but in each instance he returned useful dividends. Lucky Love has started, fifteen times, and on four other occasions he has finished a close fourth. He competed at eight meetings, and excepting in February, when he was twice fourth, he has returned a place dividend at every meeting. . , To win from 24 yards behind in a field of 25 horses a pacer must have some luck in the running, but in the Peninsula Handicap, to be run at the Canterbury Park Meeting, horses on this mark—Coherto, Eastern Prince, Gm"er Jack, Moerewa, Reylena, and Snowy de Oro —all have their admirers. They say that Guy Hugo has never been in better condition, but he is inclined to make a break without any provocation. He is faster than any other horse in his present class, but until he becomes- reliable he is apt to be a costly proposition for speculaNervie's Last has proved himself one of the finest middle-distance performers in the North Island this season.- He is at home in any kind, of going, and only once has he failed to go corrects ly all the way. This was.when another pacer ran into him before a furlong had beei' covered. Nervie's Last, who races unhoppled, should be worth following in his engagement in tlie souui.
