FLAG DAY APPEAL

MEMORIAL FUND

OVER 1700 RECEIVED

The citizens of Wellington have subscribed most generously to the King George V Memorial Fund appeal since the fund was opened, but that did not prevent them from making a good response to the collectors who were j selling flags yesterday. The planting of flags in the "Field of Remembrance" appealed to thousands, and the field became clearly marked early in the day, but the fact that over £700 was collected indicates that many purchasers of flags did not have an opportunity to visit the field later. As is generally the case when a street appeal is made, the Bank of New Zealand corner, Cuba Street, topped the list for the collectors, over £150 being taken there. The secondary schools all responded well to the appeal, Wellington College being first with over £40. Wellington Girls' College subscribed £25, but this amount was paid in t>n May 5 and was acknowledged then, so that although the amount was for flags it has not bsen added to the total announced for, yesterday. The late King's birthday was commemorated in all colleges and schools yesterday, brief addresses being given in the majority of cases. The pupils then planted their flags on a selected plot, and'these were removed to the "Field of Remembrance" later. The work of counting the money collected yesterday was continued until 11 pm., a staff of volunteer helpers from the Post Office undertaking this duty at the rooms.of the Wellington Returned Soldiers' Association. Keen interest in the result was shown by the Mayor and councillors, several of the latter being present until a late hour. THE COIXECTION. If organisations or persons holding lists will return them the actual amount collected will be made up without delay and the officers in charge of the collecting will be •aved considerable time.
