ALL-METAL PLANES

The Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Transport, has authorised the starting date of the Union Airways extension to the ' Wellington-Auckland service, circumstances permitting,' for Saturday, June 26. Schedule running will commence the following day. A twoway daily service, including Sundays and holidays, will be provided by the Lockheed Electras. now being assembled at Hobsonville Air Base, Auckland.

These all-metal machines'are fitted with constant speed propellers, .carry a crew of two pilots (with complete dual control) and ten passengers, besides having ample accommodation for freight and mails. They, are capable of a speed of 210 m.p.h. and cruise at 185 m.p.h. The trip between Auckland and Wellington, including stops of ten minutes at Palmerston Northand New Plymouth, will occupy three hours. - . . .

Following the usual practice of Union Airways, the airliners are equipped with two-way radio telegraph and telephone, and aeradio stations at Auckland, New Plymouth, and Palmer-* ston North will be equipped with the latest type of transmitter with remote control, enabling the pilots to be in radio telephone communication with the aerodrome. Other direction-find-ing equipment, as recommended by the Aeradio' Committee recently, is. being installed by:the Government as soon as the- apparatus is available.
