KING'S BIRTHDAY
OBSERVANCE IN COAL MINES

GREYMOUTH, June 2. The King's Birthday is' to be observed in all coal mines on June 9 instead of December 14, recording to Mr. A. McLagan, secretary of the United Mine Workers. Mr. McLagan also stated that the West Coast and Waikato companies paid a full day's wages on Coronation Day, but no advice had been received regarding the Southland district. •
When asked yesterday what effect the recent 'holidays had had on .. the school roll, the principal of the Hutt Valley High School (Mr. J. N. Millard), said that the position was better than he had expected.
Charged with exceeding a speed of 30 m.p.h. in the borough, Donald AVtlliams was fined £3 and costs by Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., in the Petone Court yesterday.
