YOUTH AGAINST AGE

GOLD ROD RESUMES WORK

(From "Vedette.")

SYDNEY, May 28. Two two-year-olds, both fast, and one of fair class, Micawber and Brazandt, -failed against the open sprinters at Moorefield on Saturday. Micawber started a hot favourite, but unlike the origin of his name, he showed no sign of turning up at all. He jumped out two lengths in front of the field, but soon lost his place and from then on was never a winner. He was handicapped at 8.10, or 101b over the minimum. The older horses against him were just of ordinary suburban class, but on the weight-for-age scale were at an advantage. Micawber at his previous start had won with 9.5 from quite a fair two-year-old field at Randwick. The race was won by the four-year-old Heroic Faith, who, with M. McCarten on top, carried 9.7. McCarteh also rode Brazandt in his race. Brazandt is very speedy, but does not stay too well. About a furlong from home he rolled right out on to the challenger, Strathisla. Brazandt missed a place, while Strathisla, got together again, finished on but was beaten by Kaylah. The last-named was in the scrimmage through no fault of her own. She was showing up on the outside when Strathisla was forced over on to her; There was a protest, but it was speedily dismissed. HAD STUD SEASON. Buonarroti, a six-year-old horse, won the mile event at Moorefield after a short season at the stud, having resumed racing a, few months ago. On Saturday he was the leader all the; way and scored easily. Linklet was in second place, a position he filled a week earlier at Rosehill. The apprentice J. Sullivan won his first race on Irish Morn at Moorefield. Sullivan has had only a few rides in public and shapes well. With D. Ashmore and M. Papworth, the younger school has come to the front a little more lately. Improvement, who is owned by Mr. W. S.'Glenn, carried on the good work on the flat at Victoria Park on Wednesday, winning the principal handicap very easily. There is little doubt that his hurdling experience has made him much more solid. Improvement has won two races in three weeks, and finished second' in a hurdle race. The usefulness of schooling over hurdles has also been exemplified in the case of another Victoria Park winner in Fugitive. He was not of much account, so was put over the pony hurdles. He did not race over the obstacles, but at Victoria Park ran away with a mile maiden handicap, beating an odds-on favourite, Kirrang. Kirrang started again later in the day, and again finished second. RIPOSTE DISAPPOINTS. R. W. King had two runners at Victoria Park in Riposte and Maori Maid, but both missed places. Riposte had every chance, but gave in in the straight, but the pony came on well after an indifferent start. Maori Maid is a two-year-old filly by Roydon from Boherbee.. • Iliad-had a winning representative on Wednesday in Odilion, a three-year-old filly from Oddity. She came on the scene at the end of a mile encourage handicap and beat Kirrang. Topical, an Australian Cup winner of three seasons ago, has shown a partiality for mile welters lately at Victoria Park. He scored again on Wednesday in quite good fashion, ior a winner over two and a quarter miles he has grown quite nippy with age, as he was first out and in the vanguard all the way. The only catch with him is that he at times bleeds in'his races. Gold Rod is due back at Randwick on Thursday and will re-enter G. Price's stable. Gold Rod was one of the horses' of the autumn, and he should be a force again in the spring.
