CONSULAR SERVICES GU£STS

The chairman of directors, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, and directors of the New Zealand Centennial Exhibition Company entertained members of the Con* sular services at afternoon tea in the company's board room yesterday.

The guests were Mr. Feng Wang (China), Mr. G. B.,Lane (U.S.A.), Colonel C. H.- Westori, K.C. (the Netherlands), Mr. E. S. Baldwin (Argentina), Colonel R. St. J. - Beere (France), Mr. J. T. Martin (Sweden), Mr. A. ,K. S. Mackenzie (Spain) Apologies were received from Mr. E. J. Hyams (Czechoslovakia), Mr. Stronach Paterson (Denmark), Colonel N. S. Falia (Japan), Mr. J. Halligan (Norway), and Mr. D. Allan (Uruguay).

Mr. Hislop, after . welcoming the guests, said that the object of the invitation was to acquaint them of the company's proposals in establishing the Exhibition, which would open in November, 1939, and continue .for six months. He' emphasised the .international character of the project;: and invited the co-operation, through, the Consuls, of the various Government's represented by them.' ,'■:.•'■■.',

Mr. Hislop fully explained^ the company's objectives, outlining the scope of the Exhibition by reference to preliminary plans which',he laid before the guests. He mentioned that the New Zealand Government was wholeheartedly behind the Exhibition, which would,be the principal event for the celebration of the Centenary of New Zealand in 1940.

~ A general discussion followed, and keen interest in the project was expressed by the guests. ,

■ On charges of drunkenness and of using insulting language in a public place, Patrick Fox, ship's fireman, appeared before Mr. E. p: Mosley, S.M., in»the Magistrate's Court today. SubInspector C. E. Roach asked for a remand until Friday in order to ascertain whether there was a warrant out for the accused at Auckland for ship desertion. Fox was convicted and remanded to appear .for sentence on Friday on .the first iCharge.^
