HUTT VALLEY TECHNICAL COLLEGE
The monthly meeting of the Board of Governors of the Hutt Valley Memorial Technical College, was'held yesterday: There were present Mr. W. B Nicholson (chairman), Mrs. M. Chappell, and Messrs.. E. S. Neill, A., Grierson, W. V. Dyer, P. Warner, Jas. Stonehouse. 'W. Parkinson, E. N. Campbell, and J. A. Ash. The Education Department' advised that the application for free railway tickets for certain pupils from Upper Hutt could not be granted because mere was a high school nearer than the college. Members pointed out that the courses taken by the pupils were not covered at the high school. It was decided to make further representations ..to; .the. Department on the subject. ■.-'.■■..' The Parents' Association was thanked for its donation of £4 to the college I funds. . • ■•,.••.. ■
The principal, Mr, A. McFadgen, reported that pupils had made satisfactory progress under the postal system of tuition in force prior to Coronation Day. About 85 per cent, of the pupils had taken part.' The enrolments for the evening classes was still increasing1, the number now being 564. Thirtytwo pupils had .left the day classes during the vacation, making a total of about 42\who had left during the first term. ; . .
In answer -to a question by Mr. Warner, the principal said the percentage of students who had left was about 13 as against 2j in 1933. Last year 37 students had left during the first term.
It was decided that the principal should report on the position each year from 1932. ■:,;.. The principal reported that the Public Works Department was at work levelling the'assembly ground at the rear of the school in preparation for tar-sealing next season. * ...
