"FITTING CLIMAX"
MAYOR'S REMINDER
UNRETURNED LISTS
THE CITY'S FINR RESPONSE
The Mayor (Mr. T. C. A. Hislop) expressed his pleasure today at the continued and increasing, support of his appeal for funds for the King George V Memorial. "The citizens of "Wellington are responding," said Mr. Hislop, "in a way in which long experience has shown they always respond to a worthy' cause. There is little doubt that when the fund closes on Thursday the Wellington figure will be one that will redound to the credit of the city, and, will ensure the provision of adequate health camp facilities for Wellington children." Mr. Hislop said that there wore still a number of subscription lists to be returned from business firms. For purposes of audit, e,very list sent out had been numbered, and it was essential that all lists be returned. - Some Arms which had received more than one list had found one list sufficient for the needs, of their staff and had returned one copy only. The Mayor stressed the need for returning all lists, whether used or unused, and he added that early return would be of considerable help to his officers. MANY PROMISED AMOUNTS. Mr. Hislop went on to say that, as the lists published in the daily Press have shown, many firms had contributed md contributed handsomely,,but there were still a number of promised amounts to come in. Kotarians and members of the Mayor's Committee, who had been engaged in contacting business houses, had found that in many cases business men had placed the Mayor's letter of appeal on one side for later consideration, and the letter had thus been overlooked. Frequently the "Mayor's representative was informed that the business firm had fully intended to send a contribution, but
had overlooked the matter. In such cases a cheque was almost invariably sent forthwith. The Mayor emphasised that it was unfortunately quite impossible for Rotarians and 'members of his executive to make contact with all business firms, and he asked that firms which had not been personally approached, or had mislaid his letter, or had deferred action in regard to deciding the amount of their contribution, should now take early action in view of the approach of the closing day, June 3. "From my own knowledge, said Mr: Hislop, "there is much money still to come in, and I urge business men of the city, and citizens generally, to take early action to ensure a fitting climax to the Wellington response to the memorial appeal for .our late beloved Monarch." *■
