NOT SATISFACTORY
VATICAN REPLY TO-GERMANY

BERLIN, May 31
Germany has notified the Vatican that the answer by Cardinal Pacelli, Secretary of State to the Holy See, to protests about Cardinal Mundelein, Archbishop of Chicago, is unsatisfactory.
Cardinal Mundelein, Archbishop ot Chicago, recently attacked Herr Hitler after which the newspaper Der An'grifr," owned by Dr. G°ebbels Minister of Propaganda, declared the attack to be a declaration of war and an insult to the whole German nation, including Roman Catholics. The newspaper asked if the Holy See would permit the Cardinal to ; abuse Herr Hitler Dr. Goebbels himself, gave warning of drastic steps against high dignitaries of the Roman Catholic Church if Catholics, either in Germany or abroad, continued their criticism of the "morality trials" now being held in Germany. The Vatican, ml reply, pointed out that it could not be held responsible for the persona views of individual cardinals and directed attention to the fact that the German Government permitted Press attacks on the Pope. It was reported that Germany had decided not to send another Ambassador to the- Vatican to succeed the present representative who is retiring because of his age.
