C.1.0. STRIKES
BRITISH COLUMBIA MINES VANCOUVER, May 26. Mr. John L. Lewis's Committee for Industrial Organisation has penetrated to British Columbia, where 500 men have struck in two goldmines, demanding recognition ,of the C.1.0. union and a wage increase. The mines were closed with a statement by officials that they will not tolerate alien agitators. N Waterfront workers at seven British Columbia ports are calling meetings to-discuss protection "against foreign attempts to exploit the workers." vent a breach in the ranljs of the Labour movement. As the war dragged on, more arid more Labour "supporters rallied to him, but in 4 the khaki election of 1918 he lost his seat. The,first Labour Prime Minister was also the first Labour Minister of Foreign Affairs and his policy was claimed to be a success. But his Ministry fell over a dispute which began over a non-prosecution of the editor of the Communist "Workers' j Weekly," who was allegedly guilty of ; sedition. The Zinoviev Letter was 1 discovered to sway the result and the Conservatives returned to power. But < in 1929, at the end of five years of 1 office, the Conservatives were defeated , and Mr. Mac Donald became Prime < Minister for the second time. In the ! second year of his Government the i financial crisis developed, he turned ] to the Conservatives and Liberals, went i to the country and won an overwhelming victory which allowed him to continue as Prime Minister until 1935. The reconstruction of the Ministry which took place at that time gave him the post of Lord President of tlis Council. In 1936 he lost his scat, but was returned a little later for Scottish Universities. More than once i there has been talk of him going to ' the House of Lords, but some com- ] mentators declare that $here is family ' opposition to his taking a title. I
