San Francisco recently "settled" the Ilast casualty of the World War with a payment of £120. Oddly enough, i the payment was to a minor, Robert Breuck, who was not alive when the World War was fought. The. paradox is an odd one. There was formerly a Berlin Street in San Francisco. When America entered the war, and a senseless hysteria changed "hamburger" to "Liberty steak," the name of Berlin Street was changed to Brussels Street. But the process of changing was not simple. The name "Berlin" had been stamped into the sidewalk. The Board of Public Works had to chisel it out. This left a hole six inches deep and 12 inches long. It was never filled up. A few weeks ago Robert tripped over it, tfell, and broke his leg. Inasmuch as the hole is in front of the Taylor Elementary School, the school board was asked to pay £120 damages. But inasmuch as the Board of Public Works had left the hole, it was felt there was an obligation there also. So it was arranged that the two municipal departments should split the damages. So Robert got £120 as a World War casualty,1 and-an .expensive lawsuit was. avoided-
