THE WINTER MINIMUM
The racing at the weekend will see the end of the ordinary minimum in flat races and the coming into operation oi' the winter minimum. As from last year, the winter rule is in'force from June 1 till August 31. The present rule sets the winter minimum at 8.0, except in the principal flat event each day, in which the lowest weight might be 7.0, but in which it is in effect now 7.7, because of the recommendation of the Minister of Internal Affairs made last July. The first meetings at which the winter scale will operate are the Wanganui and Great Northern Meetings. At both these meetings, opening on Saturday week, the minimum in the principal flat event is 7.7 and in the other flat events 8.0. At the Auckland Meeting last year, because the opening was at the end of May, the 7.0 minimum prevailed on the first day and the 8,0 on the other two days.
