CAMBRIDGE GO CHEAPLY
DUNNING AGAIN DOES WELL
N.Z. MAKE BAD START
(By the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association.) • CAMBRIDGE, May 26. Although the weather was swelter-' ingly hot for the first day of the New Zealand cricket team's match against Cambridge University, the wicket was soft after overnight rain. M. L. Page, the touring team's captain, won the toss, and decided to ( give the University first use of the wicket. The move was justified when Cambridge were dismissed for'lo2 runs, but much of the advantage was lost when the first four New Zealand wickets fell cheaply. At stumps New' Zealand's score was' 46 for four wickets. . The teams are:-^ . , . ! New Zealand.—M. L. Page (captain), W. A. Hadlee, M. W. Wallace, D; A. R. Moloney, A. W. Roberts, J. A. Dunning, J. Cowie, J. R. "Lamason, W. I?. Carson, N. Gallichan, T. C. Lowry.., Cambridge.—A. F. T. White, Payton, M. Tindall, N. W. 0. Yardley, J. H. ; Pawle, P. A. Gibb, D. C. RoughtRought, J. H. Cameron, -W. White. Kaye, T. W. Fraser.. ... . , The University made a slow start, scoring 11 runs in half u an hour. Then: Dunning successfully exploited a leg trap, getting two of the leading batsmen caught,' one by, Page at forward short leg, and one by Carson close in at square leg. Dunning bowled 18 overs, including eight maidens, for 26 runs, and two wickets. Cowie and Roberts were ineffective. Yardley, who droye Gallichan to the boundary thi;ee times, fell a. victim to, the Moloney-Lowry combination off Mbloney's first ball: COLLAPSE OP CAMBRIDGE. After lunch, when, the score was 70 for' three wickets, the- sun1 shone, out very hot. Cowie received no benefit from the sticky wicket, but it assisted Dunning and Gallichan* who bowled accurately throughout the next threequarters of ,an ,hour, the seven remaining wickets falling for 32 runs. Dunning bowled round the wicket, spinning the ball, and also making it swerve; He completely routed the university batsmenj.and at one stage took three wickets with,four:balls.. Admirable placing.of, the field, by Page resiilted ,in , Hadlee catching Rought-Rought on the leg boundary without shifting an Inch..' The New Zealand fielding was perfect. New Zealand made a disastrous start. Hadlee was out first ball "to the fast bowler Rought-Rought '. as also was Page in the next over.' Carson and Roberts were forced to give catches off the left-handed medium slow bowler Fraser, but the wicket was now easier and the weather overcast. ; Moloney continued to score in easy fashion and hit three 4's past point and to cover. Owing to an approaching thunderstorm stumps, were'drawn an hour early. The light was bad and then rain came. ; Details:— ■ ',', CAMBRIDGE .UNIVERSITY. ,; , ■...'■,'■ ■ First innings. ,-..... „, .;' .'.
