NO IMMEDIATE HOPE
MR. SAVAGE'S EFFORTS
STIMULATED BY BRITISH LABOUR PARTY
LONDON, May 26. The political correspondent of the Australian ' Associated Press agency understands that during the discussions at the Imperial Conference on the international situation Britain, informed the Dominions that the viewpoints of the various countries are so divergent that there appears to be no hope at present of tackling reforto cf the League. . a This constitutes a reply chiefly to the Prime Minister of New Zealand, whose enthusiasm for the collective system, which is generally regarded here as dead, undoubtedly has beep stimulated by his contacts with the British Labour Party. The party is endeavouring to bring pressure on the British Government through -the Imperial Conference. , '■ J The Dominions have-been informed that League reform is hopeless so long as the'deadlock remains in connection with the recognition of Italy's conquest of Abyssinia. Some major Powers, including England and France, realising that Italy's conquest is a fait accompli, while confessing ' , that recognition is distasteful, believe they should cut the losses and recognise the conquest of Abyssinia de jure now, because such a step'ultimately is inescapable.
