NOTES FROM NEAR AND FAR
Cricket enthusiasts are being well catered for by the broadcasting authorities, who broadcast from the national stations each day, at 9 and 10 a.m., a report of the day's play in each of the matches being played in England ■by the New Zealand cricketers. , The Acting Prime Minister, the Hon. P. Fraser, will broadcast a talk from 2YA on Monday, at 8 p.m., in connection with the King George V Memorial Fund. Mr. Fraser's talk will be rebroadcast by IYA, 3YA, and 4YA. On Sunday, at 9 p.m., Mr. J. W. Heenan, C.8.E., Under-Secretary for Internal Affairs, may also be* heard from the' national.stations ,in a talk, "Sidelights on the King George V Memorial Arrangements have been made by the broadcasting authorities.; which'" will permit the cinema organ in the^-De Luxe Theatre to be used for a considerable time to come for broadcasts from the national stations. On Sunday at 9.15 a.m., 2YA will broadcast from the theatre a vocal and organ recital by Stella Power, the Australian coloratura soprano, and Miss Iris Mason, the popular New Zealand cinema organist. The 8.8.C. recorded. programme, "Monsieur Beaucaire," will be broad-" cast from.2YA on Wednesday, at 9.5 p.m. ■ , Lauri Paddi and his dance band have been engaged by the broadcasting authorities to broadcast a series of dance programmes from the Majestic Theatre, and from the1 2YA and 2YD studios. It is understood that the fee paid to this band is the highest yet paid in New Zealand to' a dance band combination. ' - ' ' . ■' ,■ Edmund Kurtz, the famous Russian 'cellist, and, Jessie ■ King, Australian mezzo-contralto, are featured in 3YA's programme on "Vednesday. ' The four ma^n national stations will broadcast next Thursday, at 6.15 p.m., a commentary from the Empire station at Daventry on the 154 th English Derby. ■''■.■ Overseas -artists .for . early tours of i the national stations include the Budapest String Quartet, which will first play at. IYAon .July 25; Lionello pecil, I Australian tenor, who will commence a second.New Zealand iour on July 15;. Essie Ackland, the famous contralto, who will open her New Zealand tour at 2YA on June 15; Thea Philips, .<■ the popular English, soprano, scheduled to broadcast fron> 2YA on June 14, and Joseph Kaartinen, a fexophonist from Finland, who will also begin a tour, of the Dominion in the near future.
