FUND FOR SPORT
NATIONAL ASPECT
METHOD SUGGESTED
A suggestion that sports which have a large public following should contribute from "gate" money to "a national sporting fund, "for the improvement of sporl as a whole," is made by a committee of the council of the New Zealand Surf Life-saving Association. The suggestion is contained in a report on the Government's proposal to form a National Council of Sport, received by the Canterbury executive of the association (states the "Press").
"It seems that the main factor in successfully inaugurating the scheme is the provision of adequate finance," states the report. "While it is appreciated that the Government will assist as much as possible, it is extremely doubtful, if the Government paid all costs, whether this would result in sufficient keenness and enthusiasm to make the scheme a --uccess. Sport is to a great extent self-support-ing. Our real difficulty lies in enabling those to participate who are not financially able to do so.
"For that reason we suggest that those clubs which are' popular with the public from a spectator point of view" and are in a position to command larger 'gates,' should contribute to the national sporting fund for the improvement of sport as a whole. This contribution could be in the form of the present amusement tax." '
