Many months of patient research and collection by four departments at ■ the Denham Studios were necessary before Joseph yon Sternberg could start London Films great Roman picture, "I, ' Claudius," now under production with Merle Oberon and Charles Laughton. Art director Vincent Korda journeyed . to Rome and studied at first hand the buildings: he had to reproduce. John Armstrong, designer of costumes for many of the greatest London Films, searched for ideas and authenticity in old British Museum manuscripts and volumes, and adapted his amazing costumes, to suit .the, needs of individual stars in the greatest cast of British acting talent ever assembled. Alex. Waugh, head set-dresser at Denham, brought his 15 years of Hollywood ex- , perience to the complicated business of arranging the many strange articles of furniture, properties, and drapery used on the Roman settings. Finally, • make-up man Guy Pearce; has settled on the varied "make-ups "arid wigs of . the 25 principal players. .. -- ..,
