NOMINATING PLAYERS
DATfe EXTENDED
N.Z.R.U. EXECUTIVE
A suggestion was made in a letter from the Canterbury Rugby Union at last night's meeting of the New Zealand Rugby Union's executive that, with reference to the inter 7 island and trial matches, the date for provisional nominations be extended to June 12. It was pointed out that this would enable the selectors of those unions which have representative fixtures on June 9 to see their players in action before making their provisional nominations, arid, while additional nominations may ba submitted up to June 30, it was felt that the suggested extensions would be more satisfactory for all concerned. It was decided by the executive last night that the date be extended to June 15. Those present were Messrs. S. S. Dean (chairman), X Glasgow, W. J. Wallace, A. McDonald, A. C. Kitto, and J. Prendeville, Lieutenant-Colonel J. G. R'oache, and Mr. A. E. Neilson (secretary). Pointing out that its policy was to arrange 'as many home-and-away matches as possible with nearby unions, the Thames Valley Rugby Union wrote asking for financial assistance in playing a return match this season with North Auckland. A grant 'of £15 was made. Approval was given to the agreement whereby the Thames sub-union would again be affiliated with the Auckland Rugby Union,' the boundaries to be those recognised before Thames linked up .with Thames Valley. The Hawke's Bay Union was granted £25, to be spent in assisting football in the Taupo district. ■ Several more applications for reinstatement were dealt with, and in four cases were approved. RAILWAYMEN'S REQUEST. A request,, for permission to invite an Australian Railway Workshops representative Rugby team to tour New Zealand was received from the secretary of the Otahuhu Railway Workshops Rugby Club. The intention was that the visiting side should play the four main centres and a New Zealand* workshops team. "The expense of their entertainment," the letter stated, "would be shouldered by the N.Z.R. footballers through the courtesy of the Minister of Railways in securing for us a permit to hold 9n art union. We are wanting this to eventuate this year, as there is every likelihood of a team being sent over there next year." The matter was regarded as a policy one, and was referred to the Rugby Council for consideration at its meeting on July 9.
